In 2011, Aubrey and I were starting our lives together. Both being very opinionated and moderately to severely hard-headed (especially when it comes to design), every detail was thought out and discussed. Slowly we made progress and grew closer as we worked through the trials of making every decision together.
One area we could never come to a resolution was our doormat, even when it came to what to call it. Aubrey (being from the midwest) swears it’s called a “welcome mat.”
Although a small decision in the grand scheme of things, it was the first introduction visitors would have to our style and personality, and we wanted to get it right. Unlike the three months it took us to select a sofa, the problem wasn’t that we had different preferences. When it came to doormats, we just couldn’t find anything that made either of us smile.
Between generic welcome greetings and redundant floral patterns, everything we could find seemed bland and outdated. After months, our front door stood naked.
One day an image I had seen hundreds of times before popped up in my Facebook feed. It was the iconic “Hi How Are You” frog mural by Daniel Johnston, and something clicked. The image had personality and was welcoming and friendly… everything we were looking for.
I explained my plan to Aubrey to start a doormat business, and despite what had to be her better sense, she supported me completely, and we decided to embark on the mission to provide beauty and character to entry doors everywhere.
…and here we are today. Thanks for visiting DoorMatX! Please contact us if there is anything we can do to help you.
With Much Love,
